The Dragon Boat Festival originated in China. It is a tribute to worship of dragon totems in the ancient Baiyue region. Festivals in the area of Baixue have been held in dragon boat races before the spring and autumn. Qu Yuan, the poet of the State of Chu during the Warring States Period, was also bound to rob here and there in the Luo River. The ruler used the Dragon Boat Festival as a memorial to Qu Yuan for the establishment of a loyal official.
In May 2006, the State Council included it in the first national intangible cultural heritage list. Since 2008, the Dragon Boat Festival has been listed as a national holiday. [7] In September 2009, UNESCO formally considered and approved the inclusion of China's Dragon Boat Festival in the “List of Representative Works of Human Intangible Cultural Heritage”, and the Dragon Boat Festival became China’s first holiday in the world.
