What Relay Is Used in a Solar Inverter?
Release time:2026-10-09 14:35:44

A solar inverter converts the direct-current output of photovoltaic modules into usable alternating current. Inside the inverter, relays can be used for controlled switching, isolation, precharge or other protection and power-management functions. The correct solar relay depends on the circuit architecture, DC voltage, current profile, switching duty and required isolation—not on the word solar alone.

What a relay does in a PV inverter

A relay may connect or disconnect a power path, support controlled startup, provide galvanic separation in a circuit or switch an auxiliary function. Some designs use relays for battery or DC-bus management, grid-side control, precharge coordination or safety-related disconnection. The exact function should be confirmed from the inverter schematic and system requirements.

Why DC switching requires care

DC arcs do not naturally pass through a current zero in the same way as AC. Contact spacing, contact materials, magnetic blowout design, switching speed and the actual DC voltage all influence interruption performance. A relay selected from an AC rating alone may not be suitable for a photovoltaic DC circuit.

Selection checklist for a solar relay

1. Maximum continuous current and expected overload
2. DC voltage and polarity of the switched circuit
3. Inrush current from capacitors, converters or other loads
4. Contact form and required default state
5. Coil voltage, drive current and suppression method
6. Isolation, insulation distance and dielectric requirements
7. Switching frequency, duty cycle and expected electrical life
8. Ambient temperature, heat rise, altitude, dust and humidity
9. Mechanical footprint, terminals and assembly constraints
10. Fault conditions and the required safe state

High-current relay considerations

A high current relay for a PV inverter must be evaluated at the real voltage and load profile. Continuous current, transient current and interruption current can place different demands on contacts. Thermal rise depends on contact resistance, conductor layout, enclosure temperature and airflow. The relay datasheet should be read together with the inverter's thermal design.

Magnetic latching and conventional coils

Some inverter architectures may benefit from a latching relay when the application requires a stable contact state with low holding power. A conventional relay coil may be more appropriate where frequent control changes, defined release behavior or simpler drive electronics are important. The choice depends on the control strategy, safety concept and reset behavior.

Isolation and safety review

Review creepage and clearance, dielectric withstand, insulation system, PCB spacing and enclosure conditions. Confirm that the relay's insulation specification is appropriate for the working voltage and pollution environment. Do not infer a certification or safety rating unless it is stated in the applicable model documentation.

Validation before production

Test the complete switching path at minimum and maximum supply voltage, normal and maximum ambient temperature, representative inrush current and the expected switching frequency. Verify contact temperature, release behavior, coil drive margin and performance after endurance cycling. Also test relevant fault conditions and confirm that the system reaches its intended safe state.

Meishuo relay options

Meishuo's new-energy relay range includes ME-series models such as ME106, ME108, ME109 and ME121 for evaluation against specific design requirements. Model selection still requires comparison with the current, voltage, contact, coil, insulation and environmental conditions of the inverter.
